NMSU Grants graduation ceremony set for May 9
NMSU Grants 39th commencement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 9 starting at 6 p.m. at the North Gymnasium (old gym) of Grants High School. Our NMSU Grants campus Fidel Activity Center is closed for remodeling and not available this year.
Commencement speaker will be Ed Corley Sr., Milan resident and patriarch of the Corley Auto dealerships throughout New Mexico and Colorado (photo below). The first Corley auto dealership (Corley Ford) was begun by Mr. & Mrs. Corley Sr. and their family in Grants 25 years ago and is still operational.
This year’s “Friend of the College” will be Marvin Rider, awarded posthumously. Mr. Rider was one of the first full-time faculty of NMSU Grants and retired in 1988 as an emeritus faculty in Business. Marvin recently passed away. Accepting his award will be his son Regner Rider.
The full-time faculty award is given to the annual Roush recipient. The Roush award is based on teaching excellence. This year’s Roush recipient is Stan Carlson, Faculty Program Manager of Natural Sciences. The part-time faculty award recipient is Tina Faught-Holler, Assistant District Attorney and a graduate of NMSU Grants.
A total of 150 students will be graduating this year with 71 Certificate and 79 Associate degrees to be awarded. Additionally one (1) masters and ten (10) bachelor’s degrees will be awarded to NMSU students obtaining their degrees via distance education.
Graduates will line up at 5:30 pm outside of the North Gym (old gym) of Grants High School. A reception will follow in the gym for all graduates and their families immediately following the graduation ceremony. Beth Armstead, Interim Campus Student Services Officer is coordinating all graduation logistics along with Nicole Kormick of our Student Services staff.
Our thanks to Grants/Cibola School Superintendent Kilino Marquez and Grants High School Principal Rick Horacek for sharing their gym with us for our graduation ceremony while our Fidel Activity Center is undergoing renovations.
